Do you want to start your morning feeling more energized? How about kick starting your day with an uber-healthy breakfast?
This energizing smoothie makes me want to jump out of bed as quickly as I can in the morning and rush to my blender.
What makes this smoothie so energizing and healthy?
Beets are high in natural nitrates, which your body converts to nitric oxide. Studies have shown that nitric oxide is superb at increasing the efficiency of the mitochondria (your energy powerhouses).
I use raw uncooked beetroot in order to preserve the maximum amount of nutrients, as well as give the smoothie a delicious fresh taste that gets lost in the cooking process.
Keep in mind, small countertop blenders may not be strong enough to liquify the raw beet effectively, so you may want to invest in one of the more powerful blenders.
I’ve also included blueberries, my favorite “go to” berries. They are full of antioxidants, which fight free radical damage and inflammation, and researchers have even found that antioxidants have a positive effect on learning and memory.
Banana adds a bit of sweetness and a creamy texture to the smoothie, but I’ve included it mainly for its Magnesium. This important mineral helps the smoothie energize you and fight the effects of poor sleep.
Chia seeds are a great protein source that helps you feel fuller for longer; reducing cravings and binge eating before lunch time.
Ingredients (1 serving):
- 1/2 cup blueberries
- 1 banana
- 1 small beet, peeled
- 1 teaspoon chia seeds
- 1 cup unsweetened almond milk
Preparation:
To make the smoothie creamier, I soak the Chia in water overnight. Simply put 1 tablespoon of Chia in a small jar with about 5 tablespoons water, shake it to prevent the Chia from sticking, then leave in the refrigerator till the morning.
Otherwise, start by blending the beet with almond milk for a few seconds, then add the rest of the ingredients and blend until smooth.
If you like your smoothie more chilled, I have an important tip for you – don’t just throw in ice, as it will dilute the taste. What I usually do is cut a banana into a few chunks and freeze them the night before.
Enjoy!
