3 DIY Hair Masks for a Dry Itchy Scalp

Nothing is worse than being irritated by a dry itchy scalp. Getting luscious locks is easier than you think. Of course, our diet plays a role in having healthy hair. Eating enough quality protein and fat is essential for thick and beautiful hair. Healthy fat acts an an internal moisturizer for our skin and hair, and being that our hair is made of protein, its important that we get enough protein in our every day diet.

Aside from food, you make your own simple, clean and natural hair masks that help to nourish your locks and ease a dry itchy scalp.

Here are my 3 favourite do-it-yourself hair masks:

1. Coconut Oil Mask – it doesn’t get easier than this! You only need 1 ingredient! Hair can be wet or dry for this treatment. Section by section, gently run coconut oil through your hair from scalp to tip. Wrap hair in a warm towel (one right out of the dryer will do) and leave on for 15-20 minutes. Rinse and wash.

2. Raw Honey & Olive Oil Mask – we all know how amazing olive oil is for nourishing our skin, but did you know you can also use it in your hair? Add honey to this equation which actually helps to pull moisture to the scalp, you’ve got yourself an awesome hair mask! Here’s how to make it: Mix 1/2 cup raw honey (most honey will work in this recipe) with 1/4 cup olive oil. You may need to slightly heat the mixture over low heat to whisk ingredients together really well. Use a double boiler to do this. Apply to hair and wrap hair in a plastic bag for 20-30 minutes. Rinse and wash.

3. Banana Avocado Mask – Bananas contain potassium, which strengthens and repairs damaged hair. Avocados are moisturizing and nourishing, helping to beautify those dry ends. In a blender, add 1/2 an avocado and 1 very ripe banana. Blend together well. Apply to hair, leave on for 15-20 minutes with hair wrapped in a towel. Rinse and wash as usual.

I’m sure most of us have these above ingredients stocked at home. Whip yourself up a nourishing hair mask today and bask in the benefits of gorgeous locks. As a bonus, feel free to add a few drops of rosemary essential oil to any of the above masks. Rosemary helps to stimulate hair growth and is a great antibacterial for dandruff.

Happy Hair Masking!
