Chlorella is a single celled microalgae that is loaded with nutrients needed for many body functions. This is one of the very first super foods I ever purchased!
Detoxification of Heavy Metals
hlorella contains chlorophyll; a green-pigment molecule that gives plants power to absorb energy from the sun. Chlorophyll is the foundation for photosynthesis and also called the first product of light.
Chlorophyll, which is an excellent detoxifier and cleanser, actually binds to unnecessary material in the body (heavy metals, toxins, etc.) and removes them.
Cardiovascular System
Current statistics say that 600,000 people die from heart disease in America every year. According to John Hopkins Medical Center, cardiovascular disease is at the top of the list of the country’s most serious health problems each year.
Daily consumption of chlorella has been linked to lowered risk of cardiovascular disease.
“High level of serum cholesterol is considered to be a major risk factor for cardiovascular disease…Daily consumption of Chlorella supplements provided the potential of health benefits reducing serum lipid risk factors, mainly triglycerides and total cholesterol, in mildly hypercholesterolemic subjects.”
Breast Milk
Studies have shown that daily intake of chlorella may help to improve the quality of breast milk during early lactation. This is due in part to its high concentration of vitamin A, which is important for the health of newborn infants.
“Breast milk carotenoids provide neonates with a source of vitamin A and potentially, oxidative stress protection and other health benefits. Chlorella, which has high levels of carotenoids such as lutein, zeaxanthin and β-carotene, is an effective dietary source of carotenoids for humans…Our study shows that Chlorella intake during pregnancy is effective in improving the carotenoid status of breast milk at early lactation.”
Protects Cells Against Radiation
In a study done by the United States Army, Guinea pigs who ate chlorophyll-rich diets were exposed to lethal doses of radiation. These guinea pigs experienced half the mortality rate than those guinea pigs who were given a non-chlorophyll rich diet .
Fibromyalgia
Some evidence shows that chlorella, which is rich in proteins, vitamins and minerals, may help to relieve symptoms of fibromyalgia and other similar disorders like hypertension and ulcerative colitis.
“It has been suggested that the consumption of natural “whole foods” rich in macronutrients has many healthful benefits for those who otherwise ingest a normal, non vegetarian diet. One example is dietary supplements derived from Chlorella pyrenoidosa, a unicellular freshwater green alga rich in proteins, vitamins, and minerals….Daily dietary supplementation with chlorella may reduce high blood pressure, lower serum cholesterol levels, accelerate wound healing, and enhance immune functions.”
Antioxidant
Chlorella is a rich source of vitamin C, which is an antioxidant that protects cells from free radicals.
“Vitamin C in humans must be ingested for survival…Antioxidant effects of vitamin C have been demonstrated in many experiments in vitro. Human diseases such as atherosclerosis and cancer might occur in part from oxidant damage to tissues.”
Vitamin C is also required for synthesis of collagen, carnitine, and neurotransmitters. These help the body build tissue, enhance brain function, influence your mood, and produce energy.
Supports the Liver
Current research suggests that chlorella may prevent liver toxicity.
Other Benefits
Studies have shown that chlorophyll helps to control hunger cravings, body odor, relieve swelling and redness from infections, promote cleansing and healing in the body and even protect DNA against fried foods.
How to enjoy the benefits of Chlorella
Chlorella comes in powder, capsule, and tablet form. Throw it in your smoothies and juices! You can also sprinkle the powder onto cereal, yogurts and salads.
Chlorella is one of the main ingredients in Organifi Green Superfood powder.
