One thing that I love most about juicing can make a food that may not be my favorite in its solid form take on a completely different life once turned into juice.
This juice recipe contains several ingredients that I don’t necessarily prefer the taste of in their traditional form, but together, and in liquid form, taste absolutely delicious. But that’s not the most important part of this great recipe. Every single ingredient in this fresh juice is so incredibly healthy for your body and will nourish it from top to bottom, with fresh beets being the star of the show.
Beets are really special in that they contain special phytonutrients called betalains. These nutrients have been shown to provide your body with antioxidant as well as anti-inflammatory support, which is increasingly becoming important in an unhealthy world.
This juice can be prepared in several ways, depending on what you prefer to add to it, without changing the overall taste one bit. This simply means that if some of the ingredients are not available, you can substitute for others or simply leave some out if you need to.
However, to get the fullest benefit and best taste from this wonderful juice recipe, you will want to keep it as close to the original recipe as possible for maximum effect and enjoyment.
Ingredients: (Makes 1 liter)
- 1 beet (with or without beet greens)
- 1/4 purple cabbage (one large wedge)
- 5 celery stalks
- 5 medium carrots
- 1 – 5 inches of ginger (if you prefer more spicy ginger taste, add as much as you like)
- 1 lime
- 1 apple
Optional/interchangeable ingredients:
- 2 – 4 Swiss chard leaves
- 1 medium handful of fresh parsley
After drinking this juice for some time I started to experiment with adding greens. And what I found is that it does not change the taste very much at all to add them, and the benefit is so much greater than leaving them out. The parsley adds a fresh flavor and aroma to this juice that is wonderful and cleansing.
If you are not a fan of chard or are unable to get any, kale or spinach or any other green will work just fine. The lime and ginger in this juice along with the sweet carrots and beets make the overall flavor delicious almost no matter what else you add to the mix.
Instructions: Throw everything in and enjoy the deep, red color of this juice. Adding more greens will turn the juice slightly brown but will still taste quite great. I recommend adding the ginger second to last and then the lime to clear the ginger root out of the juicer.
From my experience the fibers of the ginger can clog up the juicing blade and screen so it’s best to leave that step until the very end for best results.
Finally, enjoy! This is a wonderful healthful drink that our family enjoys every single weekday before starting work, and it gives us the energy and vitality to power through the morning feeling light and satisfied.
